Schools Become Friends

Hong Kong Academy, Hong Kong SAR

Children and teachers at the Hong Kong Academy (HKA) were perhaps the first one out of the blocks. They have been supporting Anajali/Kanzi for a few years. Middle School students set up small businesses to raise money for paint and painting equipment. The businesses have included making and selling calendars, making leaflets to raise awareness of the poverty in Kibera and a bake sale. The school’s Art teacher, Rachel, who became involved in Anajali and Kanzi eleven years ago when living in Tanzania, came out to work with Kibera children to paint Anajali School. They painted Tingatinga animals on the walls of the school. Later, Rachel came back with Sonya, a maths and science teacher to help the children paint the rest of the walls. HKA also funded the mending and weatherproofing of the roof of the school. They have days when all the primary and secondary children dress up and students make donations support children in Kibera. This money has been used to build new toilet blocks. Some staff members also ran in the Macau half marathon and 5 K race and were sponsored by Friends and family.

The Student Council has been instrumental in keeping the children of Kibera in the minds of the children at HKA and have ensured that Kanzi continues to enjoy support from the school.

They have also exchanged letters and cards… they are true friends.

Broadbottom Primary School, UK

Our friend Des Lee has been working very hard to help since his trip to Kibera two years ago. He has successfully linked Kanzi-Kibera Friends to Broadbottom Primary School. Thanks to his influence, the administrators have made Kanzi-Kibera Friends their official charity.

Cyprian has visited twice. The first time an introductory session was held with all 200 children and parents. The second was a most successful African night of stories. Replies from Kibera children to letters sent by the Broadbottom children were projected on an overhead screen to the children’s intrigue and excitement. We were all treated to Kenyan cuisine at the end of a fantastic night.

Thank you to our UK friends!

Ecole Active Bilingue, France

Ecole Active Bilingue hosted Cyprian Yobera for a week and he spent the time talking to the children on the school’s five different sites. He also held information sessions for staff and parents. There was much singing and the children and staff were taught a number of songs in Kiswahili.

The parents and teachers at EaB have held a series of successful bake sales. Some of these were hosted within the three Kanzi-Kibera awareness weeks held this year. The children also participated by creating African masks and designing folder covers with African motifs to sell to their parents and friends to raise money. Parents and teachers also ran the Paris half marathon to raise funds. A major project by the school was to fill a shipping container with a variety of resources for the schools plus clothes, shoes and toys. This has now made its way to Kenya!

A big thank you to our friends in Paris!
